How ‘Five Guys Named Moe’ explores big issues with upbeat music

Ebony Repertory Theatre has plenty to be jazzed about as it presents “Five Guys Named Moe” at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles starting May 19.

It’s the 25th anniversary of the musical written by Clarke Peters (best known for his acting roles on HBO’s “The Wire” and “Treme”) about a man examining his life with the help of five titular Moes, who are aspects of his psyche, and the music of Louis Jordan.
