GARDEN GROVE – La Quinta quarterback Michael Nadeau ran for four touchdowns, including the game-winner with 23 seconds remaining, as the Aztecs came back to defeat Laguna Beach, 38-34, Thursday at Bolsa Grande High.

The season opener for La Quinta was a lot different from its 2016 season opener against Laguna Beach. In last year’s game, La Quinta lost to Laguna Beach, 52-14.

La Quinta coach Andy Diaz said the Aztecs proved something with the win over Laguna Beach, which played in a CIF-Southern Section semifinal last year and is ranked No. 8 in CIF-SS Division 12.

“I’ve been telling everybody that this is the team,” Diaz said, “that we have a great team here. Nobody believes it but ourselves.”

Laguna Beach took its first lead of the game, 34-30, with 1:22 to go in the fourth on a 16-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Curtis Harrison to Jack Strickland.

When La Quinta got the ball back, a 43-yard pass from Nadeau to Anthony Farley put the Aztecs at the Laguna Beach 2-yard line. Nadeau, as he had on his other short-yardage touchdown runs, blasted his way into the end zone with 23 seconds remaining. He also ran for the two-point conversion and the 38-34 lead.

Laguna Beach, which beat Bolsa Grande, 42-21, last week, had time for one final play from scrimmage. Harrison scrambled around while searching for an open receiver. With no time left on the clock, Harrison heaved a pass that fell incomplete.

La Quinta had a couple of large leads. The Aztecs were ahead, 24-7, early in the third quarter and 30-14 late in the quarter.

Nadeau finished with 54 rushing yards. He threw for 118 yards.

Harrison completed 13 of 25 passes for 293 yards and four touchdowns. Breakers running back Adam Armstrong had 115 yards receiving, including a 65-yard screen pass for a touchdown. Receiver Sean Nolan had 117 receiving yards on six catches, one for a touchdown.

La Quinta took a 7-0 lead on Nadeau’s 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Aztecs got the ball at the Laguna Beach 38-yard line on Jayelen Walker’s interception that was made at the La Quinta 47. A 33-yard run by La Quinta’s Jason Ly preceded Nadeau’s scoring run.

Laguna Beach tied it later in the first quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Harrison to Nolan.

The Aztecs regained the lead on a 34-yard field goal by Jose Arredondo to make it 10-7.

La Quinta pushed its advantage to 17-7 on a 15-yard run by Dylan Do. Do took a handoff, was trapped in the backfield and then made a series of cuts and moves to get to the end zone.

Laguna Beach plays Big Bear on Sept. 9 in an afternoon game at Big Bear Middle School. La Quinta plays at Webb of Claremont on Friday, Sept. 8.
