SAN BERNARDINO >> The San Bernardino High football team picked up its first win of the season, beating Arroyo Valley 28-20 in a game that was called with 3:39 to play.

Arroyo Valley had just scored a touchdown to cut San Bernardino’s lead to eight, and the teams were lining up for the ensuing kickoff when gun shots were heard nearby. After a lengthy discussion, officials called the game in favor of San Bernardino.

The ending took the spotlight a little bit from San Bernardino senior running Darian Estes who scored three rushing touchdowns. He also had a 68-yard run that set up the Cardinals’ second touchdown of the night.

San Bernardino also forced two Arroyo Valley turnovers in the red zone in the first half.

It was a nice turnaround for the Cardinals, who lost 31-0 to La Sierra in the debut of first-year coach Wes Choate. San Bernardino also avenged its 20-18 loss to its crosstown rival from a year ago.

Estes put San Bernardino on the scoreboard first with a 13-yard run, followed by a 2-point conversion.

With under 20 seconds to go in the first quarter, Arroyo Valley reached inside the Cardinals’ 15 when Sir Johnson picked up a fumble for San Bernardino.

Estes took a handoff the first play of the second quarter and ran 68 yards into Hawks’ territory. Then quarterback Roman Navarro kept it for himself for a 13-yard TD run.

Once again, Arroyo Valley got to the 15. This time, Arroyo Valley quarterback Rolando Pocheco’s attempted pass found the hands of San Bernardino’s Javon Nicholson for an interception.

Arroyo Valley finally got on the scoreboard when Jordan Boykin returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown to cut San Bernardino’s lead to 14-6.

The Cardinals proceeded to score on the next drive when Estes wrapped up an eight-play, 81-yard drive with a 15-yard TD run to put San Bernardino up 20-6.

Arroyo Valley came right back on the next drive with a score of its own. Pacheco hooked up with Jose Macheco to keep the game a one-score game at 20-12.

Helped by a big kickoff return by Jalin Stewart, the Cardinals had just 25 yards to go on its final scoring drive early in the fourth. Estes completed that with a 3-yard run.

Arroyo Valley then proceeded to use eight minutes to pull themselves back within eight when Pacheco hooked up with Jacob Tkatch to make the final score at 28-20.
