The flu and winter weather have caused another problem: Less blood donations

The winter weather, flu season and holiday schedules have drained blood and platelet supplies across the nation, which has prompted the American Red Cross to make an urgent plea to the public to donate.

Dozens of blood donation events have been set up across Los Angeles County, American Red Cross officials said.

“Two hundred blood drives were cancelled due to winter and has caused 6,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected,” said Christine Welch, spokeswoman for blood services for the American Red Cross, Southern California region.

The flu has also had an affect on blood donations across the nation.

Burn and accident victims, and heart transplant and cancer patients are among those who need blood and platelet donations, Welch said Friday.

“Blood can’t be stockpiled,” she added. “It needs to be readily available for hospitals. That’s why its urgently needed.”

Welsh said those who want to give blood can go to a donor center, where will have a mini physical, to assess good health. Those who have just received a flu vaccine can also donate blood, she noted.

“Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients,” Clifford Numark, senior vice president, Red Cross Blood Services, said in a statement. “It’s the blood on the shelves that helps save lives in an emergency, and that’s why we’re asking eligible individuals to make an appointment to give blood or platelets today.”

All blood types are needed, but platelets,Type O negative, Type B negative and Type AB are all most urgently needed.
